Scripture: Mark 7

I’m writing this on Sunday morning, sitting home listening to our church service online, reading through Mark 7 for today’s post, when Pastor Brandon brings up Mark 7:18-23 (love it when that happens) :

18 And he said to them, “Then are you also without understanding? Do you not see that whatever goes into a person from outside cannot defile him, 19 since it enters not his heart but his stomach, and is expelled?” (Thus he declared all foods clean.) 20 And he said, “What comes out of a person is what defiles him. 21 For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, 22 coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. 23 All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.”

He talked about the fact that we are defiled, unclean, and in need of a Savior…everyone of us.

Jesus is the only one who does all things well. We all need Him to cleanse us. We can’t do it with our own “goodness”.

***Some versions of this chapter include verse 16. You’ll notice in the ESV that it’s missing, but it’s noted:

The Word of God is perfect and inerrant but the translations are tainted by human hands. I like the versions that are closest to the original text but the Lord uses the different versions to highlight the words and meanings for different people. He’s the one who give you ears to hear and eyes to see. He’s the one who brings His word to life and let’s it speak to the hearts of individuals in just the right way, at just the right time.

He does all things well.
