Scripture: 1 Thessalonians 2

An outline through verse 12.

Notice the positive things Paul did and the negative things he did not do…all with the goal of encouraging the Thessalonians to “walk in a manner worthy.” You can take notes like this from any scriptures you study in order to see how to apply the word to your life.

Paul’s ministry to the Thessalonians:

  • “Our coming to you was not in vain” (vs. 1).
    • In the past:
      • Suffered
      • Been mistreated
      • “had boldness in our God to declare to you the gospel of God in the midst of much conflict” (vs. 2).
    • Present time:
      • Exhortation does not come from error/impurity/way of deceit (vs. 3).
      • Approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel.
      • Speak not as pleasing men.
      • God examines hearts (vs. 4)
  • How they came:
    • NOT with:
      • Flattering speech
      • A pretext for greed (vs. 5)
      • Seeking glory from men (vs. 6)
    • BUT with:
      • Gentleness (vs. 7)
      • Imparting their own lives (vs. 8)
      • Labor and hardship (vs. 9)
      • Devout/uprightness/blameless behavior (vs. 10)
      • Exhortation and encouragement as a father (vs. 11)
  • GOAL: that you would “walk in a manner worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory” (vs. 12).

How can you share the gospel and how can you follow Paul’s example?

2 preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. 3 For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, 4 and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. 5 As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.

2 Timothy 4:2-5

Journal: Write a prayer asking God to help you walk in a manner worthy.

Move: Run 2 miles at your 10k pace…or a pace that’s just a little bit uncomfortable.

{Beginner’s run #23: Walk 5 minutes to warm-up, then run 20 minutes, then walk 5 minutes to cool-down.}

Praise the Lord, and keep showing up!
